Movement disorder is a type of nervous system linked disorder that occurs in the brain and central nervous system that controls motor functions. Basically, it means there is abnormal positioning or movement of any body part due to the dysfunctionality of nervous system or due to primary neurological disease.
Common Types of Movement Disorders
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Essential Tremor
- Dystonia
- Tourette’s Syndrome
- Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
Causes of Movement Disorders
- Stress, anxiety and emotional disturbances
- Intake of certain drugs
- Chronic disease such as an over active thyroid gland
- Alcohol consumption
- Deficiency of Iron
- Excess copper in the body
- Neurodegenerative conditions
- Genetic defects
Symptoms of Movement Disorders
Sometimes you might experience uncontrollable movements such as shivering from nervousness or fear, or hiccups. If these symptoms are persistent, it is a sign of movement disorder. Visit your regular physician to evaluate the unusual signs or symptoms.
- Movement disorder’s early signs and symptoms include twitching, tremors and muscle spasms.
- Additionally, you might experience difficulty with motor skills such as fastening a button, writing with a pen or muscle weakness.
- Change in steps while walking, loss of balance and clumsiness are also a sign of movement disorder.
- Rigid or stiff limbs and trunk (spasticity).
- Slow movement (bradykinesia).
- Movement inability (akinesia).
- Muscles contraction or tightening (dystonia).
- Difficulty in swallowing and speaking.
- Problems with thinking and behaviour.
- Psychiatric symptoms accompanying progression of severe disorders.
